Today is Wednesday, October 21st. Six days ago was the tax deadline. And we’re still waiting on electronically filed returns to be accepted.
Normally I’d say, “Bring me the usual suspects!” That’s New Jersey and New York; those states tend to take a long time to accept returns. However, all of our New Jersey and New York returns were accepted by Monday. This year, Colorado returns we filed on October 15th were accepted late yesterday. And we’re still waiting on returns from Kentucky, North Carolina, and Maryland. As to why, there’s no good answer (it’s issues with the state processing systems).
Taxpayers can relax: It doesn’t matter when the return is accepted; it matters when it is filed. If a return is filed on October 15th and accepted on October 25th, it’s considered filed on October 15th. It’s just annoying for both us (we would like to close out the Tax Season) and taxpayers (they want finality).
For the taxpayers still waiting, sooner or later (perhaps that should be later or later) we’ll get the acknowledgment that your return was accepted and let you know.
